Heidelberger extension tubes are used when a standard infusion line (1m to 1.5m in length) is not sufficient, e.g. if the patient has to be mobilised to prevent bed sores or needs to be laid on their side. Thanks to the extension tube an infusion tube can easily be extended up to 140 cm and the infusion solution can be administered despite an increased distance between the patient and the infusion device. The transparent material offers a maximum of safety, as the optical control option ensures an optimal flow.

A Heidelberg extension can also be used to determine venous pressure behaviour. In this case, the corresponding vein is punctured with a cannula and this cannula is connected to the extension. This in turn is connected to a pressure transducer. As with the above use, all air must be removed from the extension line beforehand.
